I find Calvino's introduction to "Fantastic Tales: Visionary and Everyday" very useful in my thinking about the difference between fairy tale and myth though he does not directly address the question at all. Peoples belonging to the same linguistic family also tend to have common elements in their folklore - the Uighurs of East Turkestan and the Turks of Turkey may be physically separated by many countries in between, but they both have stories of the folk hero Effendi Nasreddin Hodja.
